Modbury
is a delightful market town in the heart of the South Hams with
a history stretching back to the Domesday Book.
With
a population of about 1600, there is an excellent primary school,
a health centre, three churches, a dentist, an optician, a Post
Office - and two old Coaching Inns. Unlike similar places in the
area, this is a thriving community - some residents trace their
Modbury ancestors back for centuries.
Shopping
here is a positive pleasure. There are several large national supermarkets
within easy driving distance, but all the necessities can be found
right on your doorstep - a Master Butcher who specialises in game
and local seafood, a Greengrocer who sells locally grown vegetables
and a wide selection of fresh herbs, a traditional home bakery and
a well-stocked delicatessen. There is also a variety of ‘specialist’
shops - a hairdressing salon, several antique shops, a hat studio,
a bookshop, an astonishingly comprehensive ironmongers and a superb
designer wedding dress shop.
The
May Fair dates back some 650 years, and runs for seven days complete
with Town Cryer, bunting and, of course, a May Queen plus a programme
of activities to appeal to all ages. There are the Modbury Players,
a lively amateur dramatics group who put on several productions
each year including a popular pantomime. The Modbury Society, a
local organisation formed by residents records the history of the
area and works to preserve the heart of the Town which is a Conservation
Area.
