here is no such thing as a typical Cornish village - each one has it's own character making it unique.
This is certainly true of Boscastle. It's roots can be traced back to the Iron Age. Between then and now significant historical events have occured in the area, they are well-documented and make interesting reading.
Tales of pirates, smugglers and witchcraft abound. The sea is wild and beautiful with steep cliffs and dramatic views along one of the most stunning coastlines in Britain.
Boscastle has two village centres - the old village and the Harbour. From the footpath in Forrabury Heights, the old village is a pleasant couple of minutes walk using the short-cut down the tiny Gunpool Lane.
unpool Lane leads onto Fore Street with a variety of old cottages, the Village Hall, a new Health centre, a Post office, a Primary School and the Methodist Chapel. The Village Stores and off-licence sell a variety of household goods including logs and coal. There's also an antique shop specialising in silver and porcelain. Fore Street is now one-way, it's narrow and winding and the buildings crowd together in true Cornish style. From here the road continues to descend past the local Hairdressing Salon and on down through the beautiful wooded valley to the Harbour.
own at the Harbour are the Old Mill Shops - an eclectic mixture, to say the least - picture galleries, antique shops, craft studios etc.
Across the road from here is the Cobweb Inn - full of character with a warm, friendly atmosphere helped along by two roaring fires in the winter. The food is excellent.
Close by, in the main car park, is the Boscastle Visitor Centre which has a comprehensive collection of historical data and general information about the area. It holds a particular interest for the Nature Lover with wonderful displays and literature detailing the native flora and fauna of the Boscastle district.
